Innovate UK Project Making Great Strides

Transforming Healthcare Through Technology

Achievements in Patient Care and Prototype Development

June 2024

Significant progress has been made in the first six months of the Innovate UK project to advance ExpertCare.

The primary objective of the project, involving DXS and Health Innovation East (and partners), entails a comprehensive medicines review process of two thousand diagnosed hypertensive patients over a period of fifteen weeks. This initiative is now well underway in the first of twelve participating GP practices.

In addition to hypertension management, 2 new prototypes for lipid and diabetes medicine optimisation solutions are being developed for real-world testing.

The design and specification for the lipid solution are complete, with the prototype build commencing as scheduled.

The project’s final analysis and report will be informed by an extensive academic study, incorporating human factors and health economics, including cost-utility evaluation.

Innovate UK aims to achieve widespread adoption of these solutions to significantly improve public health. Several engagement initiatives as part of the project’s Exploitation plan are underway and show promising prospects.

New Solution Delivery Model

The project has also been updated to include a new solution delivery model derived from the i4iFAST pilot project in November last year. In collaboration with Clinical Pharmacist Solutions (CPS), ExpertCare is being delivered as a service, with CPS pharmacists – familiar with the GP practice environment – conducting the entire medicine review process. These pharmacists integrate practice protocols and formulary requirements into patient CRM systems, facilitating efficient patient reviews.

The new model has shown great potential for adoption in time-constrained healthcare environments, with early feedback indicating a positive reception.
